Summary

I am an explorer and naturalist, born in Dunbar, Scotland. I was a member of the United States Geodetic Survey in the Great Basin (1876-79) and while in Alaska sighted the glacier that now bears my name. An authority on forestry and forest management, I have visited Russia, Siberia, India, Australasia, and the Philippines to study their forests. I founded the Sierra Club in 1892. In recognition of my efforts as a conservationist and crusader for national parks, Muir Woods National Monument, near San Francisco, was established in 1908 in my honor. My publications include The Mountains of California (1894) and Our National Parks (1901).

Education

1860-62 attended University of Wisconsin for 2-1/2 years (5 tri-semesters) and taught school during the winter.

Experience

Yosemite Valley Association 1870 - Present
Lots of writing, hiking, occasional boot repair. Helped many animals that needed assistance. Explored this big U-shaped valley in California, USA. I hope that someday others will find it as wonderful a place to visit as I have. After a thousand trips in and around the valley, the view still takes my breath away!

Awani Lodge 1895 - 1900
Worked in the Awani Lodge for a summer as a repairman and welcomed guests new to the area.
